ISLANDS off CARIA, Rhodos. Rhodes. Circa 205-190 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 13.48 g 12), Onasandros. Radiate head of Helios facing, turned slightly to the right. Rev. Ρ- Ο / ΟΝΑΣΑΝΔΡΟΣ Rose with bud to right; on left, cap of a Dioskouros with star above. Ashton 264. Jameson 1556. SNG Copenhagen 757. SNG von Aulock 2803. A magnificent example of late style, sharply struck from fresh dies, probably the best example of this type known. Good extremely fine.

The late issues of Rhodes are often found rather battered and not fully struck; this is a magnificent exception that proves the rule. Struck from fresh dies with not a trace of die rust or decay, this is a truly excellent piece. The head, while far from the Classical heads found on Rhodian issues of the previous century, is a perfect example of full, Hellenistic style and is quite breathtaking. The artist who cut these dies was a true master.
