THRACO-MACEDONIAN TRIBES, Orreskioi. Circa 500-480 BC. Diobol (Silver, 0.90 g). Bull rushing to right, in the archaic “running/kneeling” posture; above neck, large pellet. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. AMNG pl. 18, 8. SNG ANS 987. Rare and nicely centered with a particularly lively bull. Slightly rough surfaces and uncleaned, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
Ex NAC P, 12 May 2005, 1444.
This is a particularly elegant example, boldly struck and well-made. The bull was a symbol of power in much of the ancient world: this bull, with its curves and fluid lines, is quite reminiscent of those found in the art of the Mycenaean Greeks, especially on gems.
