Nomos AG’s First Sale a Great Success Monday, 5/11/2009
Nomos AG presented its first public sale on 6 May 2009 in Zürich, Switzerland. It contained 203 very carefully selected lots and after two and a half hours of spirited bidding nearly 90% sold. The hammer price of CHF 4,000,195 was considerably in excess of their combined pre-sale estimate of 2,964,250, representing a 35% premium over the estimates!
Some prices* were world records, such as the 914,500 for a magnificent late Archaic-early Classical tetradrachm from the Sicilian city of Naxos (lot 26, estimated at 400,000) – the highest price ever achieved for any Greek silver coin; the powerful 61,360 paid for a lovely stater from Lycia (lot 112, estimated at 18,500), or the incredible 29,500 paid for a solidus bearing a splendid portrait of Christ from the first reign of Justinian II (lot 181, estimated at 10,000). The cover coin, an impressive didrachm of Tenedos with a wonderful late Archiac – Early Classical Janiform head made 171,100. While prices were very strong overall, some clever buyers obtained great coins at attractive prices such as the 24,780 paid for a silver stater of Alexander of Epirus once in the Metropolitan and Ward collections (lot 55, estimated at 25,000), the 5,430 for a Celtic gold stater that began the sale (lot 1, estimated at 5000), 5,900 for a lovely drachm from the Thracian city of Ainos (lot 34, estimated at 4500) or the mere 7,550 for a denarius of Q. Pomponius Rufus, one of the great rarities of the Roman Republican series (lot 133, estimated at 8000).
The atmosphere at the sale was very enjoyable with a room filled with active bidders whose participation was greatly appreciated.
