SYRIA, Cyrrhestica. Hieropolis. Trajan, 98-117. (Bronze, 26 mm, 14.87 g, 12 h), commemorating the Festival of Atargatis/Astarte in Hieropolis. ΑΥΤΟΚΡ ΚΑΙϹ Ν[ΕΡΟΥ ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟϹ ΑΡΙϹΤ ϹΕΒ ΓΕΡΜ ΔΑ] Laureate head of Trajan to right, with slight drapery on his left shoulder. Rev. ΘΕΑϹ ϹΥΡΙΑ/Ϲ ΙΕΡΟΠΟΛΕΙ/Α all within a laurel wreath tied at the bottom and closed with a medallion at the top. BMC 4. Butcher 7. RPC III, 3449. SNG Copenhagen 50. Scarce issue. Some corrosion, otherwise, nearly very fine.



The inscription on the reverse of this coin refers to the Goddess of Syria (Atargatis/Astarte), whose temple was in Hieropolis/Bambyce.
