Septimius Severus, 193-211. Aureus (Gold, 20.5 mm, 7.29 g, 6 h), Rome, 194. L SEPT SEV PE-RT AVG IMP II Laureate head of Septimius Severus to right. Rev. VICT AVG TR P COS Victory advancing to left, holding a wreath in her outstretched right hand and a palm branch over her left shoulder. This combination of dies apparently unpublished, For the obverse, with IMP II, see Calicó 2549, referring to BMCRE V, p, 30, 61 = RIC IV, p. 95, 29 (Rome), and for the reverse, with COS, see Calicó 2546, referring to BMCRE V, p. 23, 27-29 = RIC IV p. 94, 22 (Rome) and p. 138, 361 (Emesa). Extremely rare. Sharply struck and with a superbly detailed portrait of the emperor. Good extremely fine.

What we have here is actually a mint error, or mule, since it combines an obverse die dated to the first issue of 194 (with IMP II, rather than IMP III), with a reverse die that had engraved for use in 193 (with COS only, and not with COS II).
