THRACE. Chersonesos. Circa 480-440 BC. Diobol (1/6 Stater) (Silver, 10.5 mm, 0.94 g, 1 h). Rider to right, holding reins with his right hand and two spears (?) with his left. Rev. Beardless male head to right, wearing alopekis headdress; in the field to left, ear of barley; all within a shallow incuse square. BMC 8 (as Potidaia in Macedonia). SNG Copenhagen 316 (as Potidaia in Macedonia). Van Alfen, Chersonese, 24-26 (but these dies unrecorded). An extremely rare type, once attributed to Potidaia, and with a most unusual portrait on the reverse. Obverse struck slightly off center, and with rough surfaces, otherwise, very fine.
