ITALY, Tuscany. Florence. Cosimo I, Duke, later Grand Duke of Tuscany, 1537-1569-1574. Medal (Bronze, 43 mm, 45.25 g, 6 h), on the reorganization of the Tuscan militia, a struck original by P. P. Galeotti (c.1520-1574) with a reverse designed by V. Borghini, c. 1567. COSMVS.MED.FLOREN.ET.SENAR.DVX II. Bare headed and cuirassed bust of Cosimo I to right. Rev. RES.MILITARIS.CONSTITVTA. Soldier, in classical armor, standing to right at the top of a flight of steps, presenting a standard to another soldier standing to left on the steps below him; around, other soldiers. Attwood 864. Bargello 426. Rare. Well-struck and of fine quality, and with a lovely brown tone. Extremely fine.

Pietro Paolo Galeotti was a pupil of Benvenuto Cellini in Florence; he then followed him to Ferrara and Paris. He later briefly worked as a die-cutter at the Papal mint, as well as an independent medallist .
