OΠONTIΩN Ajax, wearing Corinthian helmet, advancing right, holding sword and shield; between his legs, helmet and broken spear. BCD Lokris 46 = Humphris & Delbridge 17k (O6/R6, this coin). SNG Copenhagen 49. A wonderful example, from the earliest series of hemidrachms and of splendid late Classical style . Nearly extremely fine.

From the Apollo to Apollo Collection, and from that of BCD, Numismatica Ars Classica 55, 8 October 2010, 46 .

This coin is featured in, H. B. Andersen, Masters of Miniature Art, A window to the birth of western culture and art, Nice, 2022.
The great ability of the master engraver who produced the dies for this coin is especially apparent when the coin is seen in an enlargement: the casual viewer would assume it was a tetradrachm!!
