ATTICA. Athens. Circa 131/0 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.84 g, 12 h), New style "stephanephoric" coinage, struck under the magistrates Antiochos, Karaichos and Abron. Head of Athena to right, wearing a triple-crested Attic helmet, ornamented with Pegasos and tendrils on the bowl, a serpent on the raised cheek piece, and five horse protomes on the visor, and a pendant earring. Rev. Α-ΘΕ / ANT-OXO / KAPA/IXOΣ /ABP/ΩΝ / Γ / ME Owl standing to right, head facing, on amphora lying on its side; in the field to right, chief magistrate's symbol of an elephant standing to right; on amphora, Γ (= 3rd month); below amphora, ME (= contractor's initials); all within an olive wreath. HGC 4, 1602. Thompson 396d. Well-centered and clear. Minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.
