Syria. Uncertain mint. Mark Antony and Octavia, late Summer-Autumn 38 BC. Dupondius (Bronze, 31 mm, 16.47 g, 9 h), "fleet coinage", from an uncertain military mint in the east, struck under Lucius Calpurnius Bibulus M. f., praetor designatus, 38-37. [M• ANT• IMP• TER• COS• DES• ITER• ET• TER• III• VIR• R• P• C•] On the left, bare head of Mark Antony to right, facing, on the right, the draped bust of Octavia facing left; below, between the busts, round countermark containing a palm branch and E. Rev. [L•] BIBVL[-VS• M• F• PR• DESIG] Two galleys sailing to right; above, caps of the Dioscouri; [below, denomination mark B]. M. Amandry, Le monnayage en bronze de Bibulus, Atratinus et Capito, SNR 1986, p. 78-79, C5 (D2/R- reverse not recorded but certainly close to R3) = RPC 4090. For the countermark, Howgego -. Rare. Dark patina with greenish highlights. Worn and flat-struck in areas, otherwise, good fine.
