MYSIA. Parium. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. (Bronze, 18.5 mm, 3.98 g, 12 h), 147-161. ANTONINVS AVG Bare head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. VERVS / ET FAVSTINA AV Vis-à-vis head of Marcus Aurelius to right and draped bust of Faustina II to left. Plankenhorn 54. RPC IV.2, ID 9078 (temporary). Extremely rare, with only two examples known to RPC online. Some roughness, otherwise, good fine.

From the collection of a scholar.

Faustina the Younger, shown on the reverse of this very rare issue from Parium vis-à-vis her husband Marcus Aurelius, was the daughter of Antoninus Pius, whose head is depicted on the obverse. Initially, she was engaged to Lucius Verus. However, after the death of Hadrian, who was the mastermind behind the succession planning spanning several generations, she married Marcus Aurelius. Faustina probably bore her husband 14 children, but many died in infancy. The only surviving son was Commodus.
