Lot 1179

CORINTHIA. Corinth. Circa 550-540 BC. Stater (Silver, 23.5 mm, 8.33 g). Pegasos, bridled and with a curved wing, springing to left; below, resting on the groundline, a koppa of large size. Rev. Mill sail incuse square composed of eight raised and lowered triangles. Pegasi 7 (same dies).Ravel 11 = Jameson 2497 (same dies). Very rare. A spectacular example of one of the earliest staters minted by Corinth, perfectly centered, lightly toned and most attractive. Some minor pitting on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, ex Classical Numismatic Group MBS 69, 8 June 2005, 320 (but since expertly cleaned, see below).

When this coin appeared for sale in 2005 half of the obverse and most of the reverse was covered by what seemed to be quite intractable, thick purplish deposits. After its purchase the coin was turned over to F. Kovacs who managed to do a miraculously brilliant job of cleaning, removing 0.23 g of oxides to reveal the lovely coin we have today - one of the finest of all early Corinthian staters.
