Lot 593

BRUTTIUM. Kroton. Circa 430-420 BC. Diobol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.72 g). Tripod with feet terminating in lion's paws. Rev. Thunderbolt between ⊙ ⊙ (= diobol). HN III 2134. SNG ANS 333. SNG Lockett 624 (this coin). Weber 1022 (this coin). Rare. Dark patina as found. Good very fine.

From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, from the collection of A.D. Moretti, Triton III, 30 November 1999, 104, and from the collections of R. C. Lockett, II, 1, Glendining & Co., 25 October 1955, 507 (part) and Sir H. Weber.

The two punctate circles on the reverse of this coin serve as a value mark - i.e., two obols. Interestingly enough, value marks seem to be commonly found on the low value silver coinage of Magna Graecia.
