ARGOLIS. Argos. Circa 420/410 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 7.3 mm, 0.43 g). Rosette with six petals. Rev. Corinthian helmet to right within an incuse square. BCD Peloponnesos 1037 = Weber 4173. BMC 31 = Traité III, 614, pl. CCXV, 10. Very rare. Apparently all known examples of this coin were found in the 19th century. Clear and nicely toned. Very fine.

From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, and from the collections of L. Mildenberg and C.S. Bement, Naville VII, 23 June 1924, 1904 ("Incertaines d'Europe et d'Asie").

What a surprise this coin is!! It was classified among the collection's Macedonian coins (!) and was only properly identified when it was finally looked at carefully. The BM seems to have three (!) of these pieces; this clearly points to an unrecorded 19th century find, as does the fact that BCD's piece was ex Weber and Montagu.
