Lot 1430

CILICIA. Uncertain mint. Circa 385-375 BC. Obol (Silver, 10 mm, 0.58 g, 6 h). Bearded male head to right (Ares?), wearing a crested Attic helmet. Rev. Owl standing left on a branch, head facing; to left and right, olive leaf. CNG MBS 69, 2005, 501 (same obverse die). Göktürk 55. Klein -. Rosen -. Extremely rare. Dark patina as found. Some uncleaned deposits and marks, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan.

While this coin ought to come from Cilicia since very large numbers of silver fractions were struck there for military pay, the owl may hint at a more southerly origin (though the style makes that less likely).
