THRACE. Maroneia. Circa 411/0-398/7 BC (SG) or circa 385 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 13.00 g, 7 h), struck under the mint master Hebesas. Horse galloping to left; above the horse's back, knucklebone. Rev. ΗΒ-Η-ΣΑ-Σ Linear square contain a vine with four bunches of grapes; in the field to left, scallop shell; all within a shallow incuse square. CNG 118, 2021, 104 (same dies). Cf. Schönert-Geiss 163 (kerykeion on the reverse). Cf. Triton XXVII, 2024, 122 = CNG 121, 2022, 169 (same obverse die but reverse with the symbol of a laurel leaf and berry - misidentified as a vine leaf). Attractively toned and clear. Minor die breaks and striking flatness on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

The magistrate Hebesas produced a series of staters/tetradrachms: all have the knucklebone on the obverse but, on the reverse, the name can be accompanied by either a varying symbol - a laurel leaf (same obverse die as this), a kerykeion (all struck from the same reverse die; some - as NYS XX, 2009, 119 - struck from the same obverse die as here), a scallop shell (on the reverse on the left, as here, and all struck from the same dies as this piece), or a scallop shell (on the reverse at the top) - or with no symbol at all.
