Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 20.5 mm, 3.74 g, 7 h), uncertain mint in Hispania, possibly Colonia Patricia, 19-18 BC. CAESAR AVGVSTVS oak-wreathed head of Augustus to left. Rev. DIVVS - IVLIVS 8-rayed comet with flaming tail upwards. BMC 326. Cohen 97. RIC 37b. Toned and clear. Minor marks on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Celestial Collection, Switzerland.

The comet on the reverse, the "Sidus lulium", was so-named because it was first seen by Romans in July 44 BC, just a few months after the assassination of Julius Caesar. Octavian used this opportunity to spread the story that the comet represented his deified adopted father.
