Constantine I, 307/310-337. Medallion (Bronze, 17 mm, 1.26 g), struck for the inauguration of Constantinopolis, 11 May 330, Constantinople, mid to late 330. Eight rayed star. Rev. O / C S / C within a laurel wreath with ties at the bottom and with its upper ends closed by a medallion. S. Bendall, Anonymous silver, RN 158, 2002, Type D. Cohen VIII, p. 272, 54. Göbl, Antike Numismatik, pl. 9, 105. Ramskold, Coins and medallions, Nis i Vizantija 2011, p. 151, 16A (this coin). Very rare and exceptionally nice for the type. Traces of cleaning, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Celestial Collection, Switzerland, and from the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, Leu (W) e25, 11 March 2023, 2818 and Gorny & Mosch 125, 13 October 2003, 581.

The meaning of the letters on the reverse have yet to be explained, except that they should read O/C/S/C (see Ramskold p.151-152). This donative issue was among the many distributed during festivities related to the foundation of Constantinopolis.
