SICILY. Syracuse. Circa 465 BC. Obol (Silver, 9.5 mm, 0.76 g, 1 h). Laureate head of Arethusa to right, wearing a crescent-shaped earring with a single pearl pendant, and a pearl necklace; her hair shown as strands at the back of her head and as curls over her forehead. Rev. Σ-V/R-A Wheel of four spokes. Boehringer 404 (V209/R284). HGC 2, 1372. SNG ANS 124-5. For a very similar earring on a tetradrachm with Arethusa's head, see: AMB 434, Boehringer 380 and Jameson 753. Very sharply struck and nicely toned. Of fine early Classical style, closely related to the 'so-called' Demareteion series . Some uncleaned deposits on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
