Hammer Price:  3600 CHF
Lot 57

KINGS OF BOSPOROS. Ininthimeos, with Maximinus I, 234/235- circa 238/239. Stater (Silver, 19 mm, 7.27 g, 12 h), dated Bosporan Era year ΦΛΔ = 534 = 238. ΒΑCΙΛΕΩC ΙΝΙΝΘΙΜΗΥΟΥ Diademed, bearded and draped bust of Ininthimeos to right . Rev. ΔΛΦ Laureate head of Maximinus I to right; in the field to right, club. Unpublished for this date and with the head of Maximinus. Cf. Anokhin 2014. Cf. Frolova I, p. 233 and pl. LX. Cf. MacDonald, Bosporus 595 and cf. RPC VII.2, 1834 (but all with a laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III on the reverse). A very rare, important and particularly high-grade specimen, struck shortly prior the assassination of Maximinus. Virtually as struck.

From the Black Sea Collection, formed prior to 2000.

The appearance of this coin proves that, that during Bosporan Year 534 = AD 238, the Bosporan mint produced coins for both Maximinus and his ultimate successor Gordian III.
