MACEDON, Bottiaia. Spartolos, Circa 385-350 BC. (Bronze, 15.5 mm, 3.93 g, 8 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. Β-Ο-Τ /ΤΙΑ /ΙΩΝ Kithara with four strings. AMNG III.2 24. HGC 3.1, 354. Pozzi 804 (this coin). SNG ANS 926. SNG Copenhagen 140-4. Bold, sharply struck and with an attractive green/black patina. About extremely fine.

From the collections of Mark and Lottie Salton, R.C. Lockett, Glendining & Co., Lockett VI, 12 February 1958, 1533 (part) and S. Pozzi, Naville 1, 4 April 1921, 804 (with the original Pozzi ticket).

The bronze coins selected to appear in the Pozzi auction were extremely limited in number. Only the "Crème de la crème" had this privilege, and this coin was obviously considered one of them. The coin was then acquired at the Pozzi auction by none other than R. C. Lockett; alas, the destiny of all the Lockett bronzes was not to be published in his SNG; and when the Lockett coins came up for sale, this coin was placed in a multiple lot.
