MACEDON. Neapolis. Circa 424-350 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 3.82 g, 2 h). Gorgoneion facing with protruding tongue. Rev. Ν-Ε / Ο-Π Laureate head of the nymph of Neapolis to right, her hair coiled around her head and with a bun at the back, wearing a plain necklace with a pendant. AMNG III, 11 and pl. XVI, 25. HGC 3.1, 586. Kraay & Hirmer 434. SNG ANS 429. Toned, very well-centered on a broad flan and of fine style. Good very fine.

From a European collection, ex Kricheldorf II, 28 May 1956, 977.

The drachms and hemidrachms of Neapolis share the same types, with the only difference being the laurel wreath the nymph wears on the drachms. In fact, the drachms are the much rarer denomination: their smaller relatives seem to have been struck in considerable numbers.
