Anonymous, circa 276-265 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 20.5 mm, 7.34 g, 6 h), Neapolis. Head of Hercules to right, wearing taenia, and with his lion's skin tied around his neck and his club over his shoulder. Rev. ROMANO Wolf suckling twins to right. Crawford 20/1. HN III 287. RBW 23. Sydenham 6. One of the best examples of this type, with a beautifully struck and detailed reverse. Minor rough areas and a slight die break on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, and that of the Apollo to Apollo Collection, Roma 28, 5 July 2023, 456, originally acquired privately in Monaco in December 2012.

This piece is featured in H. B. Andersen's book: Apollo to Apollo, The hunt for the divine and eternal beauty, on pp. 117 and 233. The reverse is particularly evocative since it shows the Mother Wolf bending her head around to look at her two foster-sons. She seems to be saying, "finish your main course or you're not getting dessert!".
