BOEOTIA. Thespiai. Circa 210 BC. (Bronze, 16 mm, 3.59 g, 12 h). Female (Arsinoe III) head to right, wearing modius and veil. Rev. ΘEΣΠI/EΩN Lyre; all within laurel wreath. BCD Boiotia 612. SNG Copenhagen 406-407. Dark brown patina. Very fine.

From the collection of John Aiello and that of BCD, acquired from Baldwin's in December of 1970.

Arsinoe III and her husband were supporters of the Mouseia, a Panhellenic festival that took place every four years at Thespiai. Probably to show their gratitude, Arsinoe was honored by the citizens by having her portrait on some of their coins.
