Lot 465

SELEUKID KINGS. Alexander I Balas, 152-145 BC. (Bronze, 20 mm, 6.38 g, 12 h), Denomination B, uncertain mint 91 in Phoenicia or Syria, circa 150-146. Diademed head of Alexander I Balas to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on low throne, holding eagle on his outstretched right hand and a scepter with his left; Δ monogram below throne. HGC 9, 916. SC 1854. Brown patina. Overstruck on a Antiochian issue of the same ruler, otherwise, very fine.

From the CG Collection.

This coin was overstruck, on a bronze of Alexander I Balas, struck in Antioch (SC 1790.3). Considerable parts of the undertype are still visible: The helmeted head of Athena on the obverse as well as the lower part of Nike, with the control B on the reverse. This is an important overstrike which relates chronologically two issues of the same ruler from different mints.
