Lot 40

GAUL, Northwest Gaul. Aulerici Eburovices. Circa 120-60 BC. Hemistater (Electrum, 18 mm, 3.06 g, 4 h). Celticized male head to left; below, inverted boar with pellet between legs. Rev. Charioteer driving chariot to right; below, boar standing to right with pellet below; to right, pellet within annulet. DT 2401-2402. LT -. Scheers, Evreux, no. 33. Published as no. 105 in S. Gouet and M. Petit, Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises, 2024. Rare; well struck and attractive. Lightly toned. Minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of a French specialist and from the collection of Marc Petit, acquired from Y. Cellard in 2003.

The two boars (one on the obverse, one on the reverse) should probably be interpreted as representing boar-standards, as were commong among several Celtic peoples, especially during times of war.
