Lot 421

BITHYNIA. Nikaia. Severus Alexander, 222-235. (Bronze, 23 mm, 5.48 g, 12 h). ΠΟΥ ΛΙΚ ΕΓΝΑ ΓΑΛΛΗΝΟC laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander to right. Rev. [ΙΠΠΑΡ]ΧΟC Ν-ΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ Hipparchus the astronomer seated to left, bringing right hand up to his face; in left field, globe set upon column. Rec 608. RPC VI, ID 3183.8 (temporary, this coin). Very rare. Rough surfaces, otherwise, fine.

Hipparchus was a famous Greek astronomer and mathematician, born in Nikaia, and died after 127 BC on the island of Rhodes, where he carried out his research and spent probably most of his life. He was considered one of the greatest astronomers of ancient Greece but unfortunately most of his work, with the exception of one book, is lost, and only very fragmentarily known through indirect sources.
